About OMA (ORA)
Observational Movement AnalysisTM (OMA) is a concept and an approach for qualitative and systematic analysis of visually observed movements based on a whole-body perspective to detect individual movement variations. The OMAwheelTM is a clinical tool that provides a structure for the observational movement analysis process. The OMAwheelTM is also a pedagogical tool that involves the person/patient in the mutual understanding of possible causes of the current problem or symptoms, goal setting and the rehabilitation plan.
The holistic view of the human body is central to the concept and provides an understanding of how different segments and body parts affect each other during human movements, e.g., in everyday activities. Basic in the analysis process is the knowledge of optimal and sustainable human movements, i.e., energy-efficient and smoothly performed movements. The goal is to support and guide the persons/patients to retain physical functioning, reduce pain and integrate sustainable movements into daily living.
In the courses in Observational Movement AnalysisTM, the eye’s ability to observe human movements is trained and the analysis is supported by the OMAwheelTM tool. Observational Movement AnalysisTM is not limited to specific conditions but can be used regardless of age, disability or injury.
The OMAwheelTM supports structuring the visual movement analysis by focusing on Starting position, Movement initiation, and Movement performance. A basic idea is that the performance of the movement (movement quality) is dependent on the starting position, the movement initiation, and the reaction forces. The analysis is made together with the person’s own story and the physical examination, to build a mutual understanding of the causes of the movement-related problem and how optimal movement patterns can be regained through guidance and training. The OMAwheelTM is also used to evaluate treatments and actions taken to understand what changes have taken place and what the next step will be.
The OMAwheelTM tool implies a person-centered approach based on an individual, a holistic, and a lifespan perspective. The OMAwheelTM in these three perspectives contributes to a greater understanding of the person’s situation, contributing life events (e.g., injuries, illnesses, and accidents), and current needs and desired goals. This furthermore helps clarify the need for collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
Observational Movement AnalysisTM supplemented with the OMAwheelTM supports a mutual learning process for both the clinician and the patient/person. It empowers the patient/person by providing increased knowledge and awareness of the body’s movements, an opportunity to self-reflection and the ability to solve movement-related problems. The person’s personal responsibility is made clear in the planned measures and actions which facilitates person-centered goalsetting.
